INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

"In the difficult are the friendly forces,
the hands that work on us."
--Rainer Maria Rilke"

Often solutions to problems that seem to have no solution begin with you.

It may seem that if only other people would cooperate, your problems would be solved. But you could spend the rest of your life waiting for that to happen with no change at all.

Frequently the things that are giving you the most trouble are closely connected to your own unique gifts, creativity, and personal power. You may even feel a sense of shame about facing or talking about these troubles, yet ironically they hold the answers you're seeking.

"At the innermost core of all loneliness is a deep and powerful yearning for union with one's lost self."
--Brendan Francis"

Individual therapy offers a safe and caring environment in which to explore ways of taking back the power you've given away.  A thorough exploration of your own unique history, needs, beliefs, dreams, and purpose can open up new possibilities. You may discover strengths you don't know you have, develop new ones, or discover options you haven't considered. Individual therapy can help you free yourself to live a better life.

"You are largely responsible for helping me to feel happier, better about myself, and more positive about the future!

"I feel that I have more courage to take risks... God bless you..."

-- Gary*, age 32, teacher, husband and father

COUPLES THERAPY

Did you know that conflict (or avoidance of conflict), sexual difficulties, and negative emotions (sadness, anxiety, anger) are a normal part of every committed relationship?

"What you deny to others will be denied to you, for the plain reason that you are always legislating for yourself, all your words and actions define the world you want to live in."

--Thaddeus Golas,
The Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment

A committed relationship challenges both people to grow as individuals so that they can meet their own needs and their partner's needs.  This growth can take time, effort, and courage. Of course, it also takes courage to end a relationship that's over.  But too often couples give up on a relationship because they don't know how to make it better or because they aren't aware that they have the potential to be much happier than they are, happier even than they've ever been.

In couples therapy you can learn to listen to and understand your partner, while at the same time remaining true to yourself; to calm yourself and think clearly, even when you're feeling hurt, anxious, or angry; and to disengage from manipulative behaviors, both your partner's and your own. Couples therapy can help you find the courage to make difficult decisions, to step outside your emotional and sexual comfort zones, and to more fully enjoy your own and your partner's company.

"The skills you helped us find are put to good use on a daily basis....

"We are forever grateful for your wisdom and insight as we went through that thorny patch in our life."

-- C and G*, married 20 years, parents of a five year old

FAMILY THERAPY

Would you like to be able to change thinking and behavior patterns that dominate your family's interactions but just aren't working any longer? Change occurs in families when at least one member assumes a leadership role by trying out and demonstrating preferred behaviors and offering loved ones opportunities to relate in new ways.

"Peace is such a precious jewel that I would give anything for it but the truth."
--Matthew Henry

Through family therapy you can find the courage to develop and maintain a solid sense of self, even in the midst of painful losses, seeming impasses, and anxiety producing change, in order to reap the benefits of a stable and growth-oriented family group.

"You have given me so much...

I mean both by being part of this group and what that meant, and what you have given me of yourselves."

-- Rachael*, age 37, teacher and single parent

GROUP THERAPY

A therapy group is a kind of "relationship lab" that allows you to observe and experiment with your usual ways of interacting with people. Improvised interactions are usually more satisfying than scripted ones, but most of us cling to certain habitual and predictable behaviors while ruling out more risky and creative choices.

We may conceal parts of ourselves we believe are unacceptable or try to pretend to be someone we're not. Eventually we may come to present a false self to the world, while the real self inside suffers from fear, loneliness, and boredom. A therapy group offers feedback from other members and opportunities for meaningful interaction, which can open up new possibilities in your life.
